What To Wear For A Family Photoshoot: A Mum-Photographer’s Guide
As both a mum and a photographer, I understand how overwhelming it can be to figure out what to wear for a family photoshoot. You want to look great, feel comfortable, and capture those beautiful memories, but it’s not always easy. After years of photographing families, I’ve picked up a few tips that make all the difference. Here’s my go-to guide to help you feel relaxed and confident during your session!
Coordinate, Don’t Match
The days of everyone wearing the same outfit are long gone! Instead, choose a colour palette that works well together. Soft neutrals, muted tones, or gentle pops of colour like blush, mustard, or sage look stunning and timeless. You don’t want your outfits to steal the show—the focus should be on the connection and love between you.
Comfort Is Key
I know from experience—comfort makes all the difference, especially with little ones. If anyone feels stiff or itchy in their clothes, it’ll show in the photos. Go for soft, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen that allow for movement. This way, everyone can play, laugh, and enjoy the shoot without any wardrobe drama.
Skip the Busy Patterns
I love patterns, but in photos, too many can compete for attention. Keep it simple with solid colours or subtle prints. You’ll still look put-together, but without your clothes being the main event. I also recommend avoiding any large logos or brand names. Logos can be distracting and take away from the natural beauty of the moment. You want the focus to be on you, not what you’re wearing.
Consider the Setting and Season
Think about where and when the photos will be taken. If you're shooting outdoors, light, flowy dresses or casual shirts work great, and for indoor shoots, cozy jumpers or layers can add a warm, inviting touch. I’ve done plenty of shoots in different seasons, and knowing your location and the time of year will help you dress appropriately without feeling too hot or cold.
Layers Add Depth
Adding layers to your outfit can create texture and depth in your photos. Plus, it gives you some options to switch up the look throughout the shoot.
Pack Extra Outfits for the Little Ones
Kids can get messy—whether it’s from snacks or just playing around. I always recommend packing an extra outfit or two for them, just in case.
